Indian Army to Induct DRDO-Developed ATAGS by February 2027
In a great forward movement for indigenous defence strength, the Indian Army is set to induct the Advanced Towed Artillery Gun System (ATAGS)—a state-of-the-art 155mm/52 calibre howitzer—by February 2027. Developed collaboratively by DRDO and major private industry players, the ATAGS has the potential to revamp India's artillery firepower with its longer range, high accuracy, and digitalized automation.
Project Director RP Pandey has confirmed that the initial unit is set to go through the pivotal "first of product model test." It will pave the way for deployment, should it succeed, the first regiment (18 guns) being due for induction in the next year.
In March 2025, the Defence Ministry inking a huge ₹6,900 crore order to procure 307 units of ATAGS and 327 6×6 high-mobility towing vehicles. The guns will be produced by Bharat Forge Limited, and the towing platform by Tata Advanced Systems under the umbrella of the 'Make in India' initiative.
With a firing range of over 40 km, best-in-class accuracy, and intelligent automation, the ATAGS is ready to take the place of ageing artillery platforms. Its induction will enhance India's firepower, particularly along sensitive border areas, with changing security threats.
This project signifies India's strategic shift towards self-dependent defence manufacturing and captures the intensifying harmony among DRDO, private defence companies, and the defence forces. When commissioned, ATAGS will be a force to be reckoned with in India's defence arsenal—and a mark of bold progress on the global defence landscape.
