Operation SHIVA 2025: Indian Army's Shield for a Secure Amarnath Yatra
The Indian Army has initiated Operation SHIVA 2025, a high-risk security and support operation for the purpose of facilitating the secure and undisturbed performance of the holy Amarnath Yatra. Conducted in coordination with the Civil Administration and Central Armed Police Forces (CAPFs), this multi-layered operation is a testament to the Army's refusal to compromise on the security of thousands of pilgrims trekking through the hostile landscape of Jammu and Kashmir.
In the face of mounting threats from Pakistan-backed terrorist groups—particularly after Operation Sindoor—the Army has devised a proactive security approach consisting of counter-terror operations, preventive deployment, and comprehensive corridor security. The process is not just directed towards the neutralization of immediate threats, but also towards defining the future contours of Yatra security with strong SOPs.
More than 8,500 Army troops have been strategically placed on both the Northern and Southern pilgrimage paths. The operation is supported by cutting-edge technology, including 50+ Counter-Unmanned Aerial Systems (C-UAS), electronic warfare equipment, round-the-clock UAV monitoring, and live monitoring of the Holy Cave and adjacent routes through advanced PTZ cameras and drones. This surveillance system allows for quick threat detection and instant troop deployment, with tight inter-agency coordination.
Apart from security, the mission focuses on infrastructure, medical relief, and emergency response preparedness. Engineering units are responsible for broadening tracks, establishing bridges, and laying down evacuation-capable roads. Medical assistance is huge with more than 150 medical personnel, two Advanced Dressing Stations, nine Medical Aid Posts, a 100-bed hospital, and 26 oxygen booths laden with 2,00,000 litres of oxygen.
For communication and technical assistance, Signal Companies and EME units have been sent, as well as Bomb Disposal Squads and Quick Reaction Teams on standby. Logistics are also bolstered, with emergency rations for 25,000 individuals, mobile tent cities, water points, and standby helicopters poised for instant evacuation or crisis response.
Real-time tracking of convoys between Jammu and the Holy Cave improves operational visibility, bolstering the response system through real-time digital inputs and situation awareness.
Operation SHIVA 2025 is a strong indication of the Indian Army's readiness, technology enablers, and commitment to internal security. It not only ensures the religious pilgrimage of millions of devotees but also sets a new template for how mega-religious events can be protected in high-threat areas.
