Indian Navy’s First Training Squadron Strengthens Maritime Bonds in Indonesia
The Indian Navy’s First Training Squadron (1TS) marked a significant milestone in maritime diplomacy with its port call at Belawan, Indonesia, on 20 January 2026. The squadron - comprising INS Tir, INS Shardul, and INS Sujata, along with ICGS Sarathi—received a warm and ceremonial welcome from the Indonesian Navy, highlighted by vibrant traditional dance performances that reflected the spirit of friendship between the two nations.
Currently on a training deployment across Southeast Asia, the visit to Belawan goes beyond a routine port call. It represents a purposeful engagement aimed at strengthening professional ties and enhancing interoperability between the Indian Navy and the Indonesian Navy. Personnel from both forces are set to participate in cross-deck visits, joint training activities, and professional exchanges, fostering mutual learning and operational understanding.
The port call also embraces cultural diplomacy. As part of the engagement programme, joint yoga sessions, friendly sports fixtures, school visits, and community outreach activities have been planned, reinforcing people-to-people connections alongside naval cooperation.
This deployment underscores India’s sustained commitment to Southeast Asia under its Act East Policy. It also aligns seamlessly with the vision of MAHASAGAR - Mutual and Holistic Advancement for Security and Growth Across Regions, highlighting India’s role as a responsible maritime partner. Through regular interactions with member nations of the Indian Ocean Naval Symposium (IONS), the Indian Navy continues to promote regional stability, shared security, and collective growth.
