Agniveer Kulbir Singh Becomes First Agniveer to Receive Sena Medal (Gallantry)
Army Day 2026 marks a moment for the Indian Army in its history. It is for the first time that an ‘Agniveer’ soldier gets a Gallantry award for the exemplary display of bravery on the battlefront. The ‘Agniveer’ Kulbir Singh of the Sikh Light Infantry (Sikh LI) received the award of the ‘Sena Medal (Gallantry)’ for thwarting an attempt of terrorist infiltration on the LOC.
This award is a testament not only to the individual valour but also a fitting endorsement of the natural ability and combat preparedness of the Agniveers on the frontline.
Army Day 2026: A Grand Celebration in Jaipur
The 78th Raising Day of the Indian Army was celebrated on January 15, 2026, with the main Army Day parade and celebrations being held in Jaipur, Rajasthan. This marked a big departure from tradition and reflected the intent of the Army to connect more deeply with the nation.
A gallantry award function was indeed held in Jaipur on the eve of Army Day by the Army Chief General Upendra Dwivedi to honour soldiers for their outstanding bravery and sense of duty in a really elitist manner.
Who Is Agniveer Kulbir Singh?
Agniveer Kulbir Singh belongs to the Sikh Light Infantry Regiment and is part of one of the most decorated Infantry Regiments in the Indian Army. Agniveer Kulbir was posted in January 2025 in an advanced forward post along the Line of Control; the Line of Control is usually targeted by terrorists in an attempt to infiltrate from across the border.
What transpired there would prove to be a turning point in the Agnipath scheme.
The Brave Act at the Line of Control
According to official reports, terrorists attempted to infiltrate into Indian territory under the cover of difficult terrain and hostile conditions. Noticing some suspicious activity, Agniveer Kulbir Singh showed exemplary alertness and presence of mind.
With his Light Machine Gun (LMG), he began firing accurately at the infiltrating terrorists. This led to a hail of fire that made the terrorists retreat to the Pakistani side. This neutralised them without having time to breach the Indian defence.
The incident prevented a serious security crisis. He not only protected the military personnel, but he also protected civilians.
Sena Medal (Gallantry): A Historic First for an Agniveer
During the awards ceremony on January 15, 2026, Agniveer Kulbir Singh was formally awarded the Sena Medal (Gallantry) by the Army Chief.
Why This Award Is Historic:
- He is the first Agniveer to receive a gallantry medal
- Proves Agniveers are combat-ready and battle-proven
- Reinforces trust in the Agnipath recruitment model
- Serves as an inspiration for defence aspirants across India
In total, 10 soldiers were awarded gallantry medals during the ceremony for acts of exceptional bravery.
Recognition of Army Units: Operation Sindoor
In addition to individual recognition, unit-level excellence was also recognised by the Army.
26 Army units were given commendation certificates for their excellent operational performance during Operation Sindoor, an operation conducted against Pakistan.
This confirms that the operational readiness of the Indian Army is kept in full swing along sensitive borders, with coordinated action and tactical excellence.
Agnipath Scheme: A Crucial Year in 2026
The year 2026 is particularly significant for the Agnipath scheme. It marks the completion of service for the first batch of Agniveers, who were recruited in 2022.
What Happens After 4 Years?
- 25% of Agniveers will be selected as regular soldiers
- Selection is based on performance, discipline, and dedication
- The remaining 75% will exit service
To support their transition, special reservations and opportunities have been created for Agniveers in:
- State Police Forces
- Paramilitary Forces
- Defence manufacturing and private security sectors
Agniveer Kulbir Singh’s gallantry proves that performance during these four years can leave a lasting legacy.
When Was the Agnipath Scheme Launched?
The Agnipath scheme was introduced in 2022 to recruit young soldiers called Agniveers into the Indian Army, Air Force, and Navy.
Key Features of the Scheme:
- Four years of service
- Intensive military training
- Not considered permanent soldiers initially
- Opportunity for 25% retention
The scheme faced initial protests and criticism, but operational successes like this one demonstrate that Agniveers are playing a real and impactful role in national security.
Why This Story Matters for Defence Aspirants
For NDA, CDS, and Agniveer aspirants, Agniveer Kulbir Singh’s story is more than just news; it’s a lesson.
- Courage has no rank or tenure
- Training, discipline, and mindset matter most
- Opportunities exist even in short-term service
- Excellence always gets recognised
His bravery stands as proof that every soldier, regardless of entry scheme, carries the same responsibility and honour of defending the nation.
