MoD Signs ₹4,666 Crore Defence Contracts to Boost Army and Navy Combat Capability

The Ministry of Defence (MoD) has signed defence procurement contracts worth ₹4,666 crore for the acquisition of Close Quarter Battle (CQB) Carbines and Heavy Weight Torpedoes, significantly enhancing the combat capabilities of the Indian Army and the Indian Navy. The contracts were inked on Tuesday at South Block, New Delhi, in the presence of Defence Secretary Rajesh Kumar Singh, according to an official statement.

CQB Carbines to Modernise Infantry Firepower

Under the first contract, valued at ₹2,770 crore, the MoD signed agreements with Bharat Forge Limited and PLR Systems Pvt Ltd for the procurement of more than 4.25 lakh CQB Carbines, along with accessories, for the Indian Army and the Indian Navy.

The induction of CQB Carbines marks a major step in the modernisation of infantry weapons, replacing legacy systems with indigenous, next-generation firearms in line with the government’s Aatmanirbhar Bharat vision. Designed for close combat scenarios, the CQB Carbine features a compact design, high rate of fire, and enhanced lethality, enabling troops to effectively operate in confined and urban battle environments.

The project also highlights strong collaboration between the government and the private sector. It is expected to generate employment, strengthen the domestic defence manufacturing ecosystem, and empower Indian MSMEs through component production and raw material supply.

Heavy Weight Torpedoes for Kalvari-Class Submarines

In another key contract, the MoD signed an agreement worth approximately ₹1,896 crore with WASS Submarine Systems S.R.L., Italy, for the procurement and integration of 48 Heavy Weight Torpedoes, along with associated equipment, for the Indian Navy’s Kalvari-class submarines under Project-75.

The acquisition will significantly enhance the underwater combat capability of the Navy’s six Kalvari-class submarines, strengthening India’s maritime deterrence and undersea warfare prowess. As per the contract terms, deliveries of the torpedoes will begin in April 2028 and are scheduled to be completed by early 2030. The torpedoes are equipped with advanced technological features and offer high operational effectiveness, reflecting the government’s focus on inducting niche and cutting-edge weapon systems.

Strong Push for Armed Forces Modernisation

The Ministry of Defence noted that during the Financial Year 2025–26, capital acquisition contracts worth ₹1,82,492 crore have already been signed, underlining an unprecedented push towards the modernisation of the Armed Forces. These procurements reflect India’s continued emphasis on self-reliance, technological advancement, and enhanced combat readiness across land and maritime domains.

The latest contracts reaffirm the government’s commitment to strengthening national security while simultaneously promoting indigenous defence manufacturing and preparing the Armed Forces for future conflict scenarios.
