Private Sector Leads the Way in Indigenous Production of Helicopters
In a milestone effort in the pursuit of India's aerospace aspirations, TATA Advanced Systems Limited (TASL) is collaborating with Airbus to establish the nation's first private-sector helicopter Final Assembly Line (FAL). The plant, under construction in Vemagal, Karnataka, will produce the globally acclaimed H125 helicopter, a groundbreaking achievement for India's aviation landscape.
The project will deliver "Made in India" H125 helicopters for civilian and defence use. There will be a specialized military variant, the H125M, optimized to perform in some of India's most challenging environments, such as the hilly Himalayan terrain. The first helicopter rolled out of the Vemagal factory is to be delivered in early 2027, with intentions to export to other neighboring South Asian nations too.
"India is the ideal helicopter market. A locally built helicopter will not just generate industry growth but also position helicopters as an integral part of national development,"
— Jürgen Westermeier, President & Managing Director, Airbus India and South Asia.
Enhancing Self-Dependence & Competitiveness at Global Levels
Sukaran Singh, TASL's CEO and MD, pointed out the importance of this achievement:
"This is India's first private-sector helicopter assembly line and our second partnership with Airbus. It demonstrates our increasing experience in providing advanced aerospace solutions to both civil and defence markets. TASL has the potential to produce, integrate, and perform full tests of helicopters—enhancing India's path towards self-reliance in aerospace technology."
The H125, which is among Airbus' celebrated Ecureuil family, is the world's leading single-engine helicopter. Renowned for its versatility, power, and high-altitude capability, it is the only helicopter to have landed on Mount Everest. It can be used in various roles such as firefighting, law enforcement, search and rescue, air ambulance service, and passenger transportation.
Atmanirbhar Bharat in Action
The opening of this helicopter assembly line is perfectly in line with India's 'Atmanirbhar Bharat' (self-reliant India) mission. It will help increase domestic aerospace production, establish a strong ecosystem of civil and military rotorcraft, and enhance India's technology self-reliance.
Airbus has had a long-standing tie-up with India for more than 60 years, adding to platforms such as the Cheetah, Chetak, and C295 aircraft. The new line of H125 will supplement TASL's current C295 aircraft assembly plant in Vadodara, Gujarat, highlighting Airbus' holistic contribution to the aerospace development in India — from designing to manufacturing, to maintenance and talent building.
This strategic alliance is anticipated to open up new civil aviation possibilities, serve para-public markets, and fulfill the Indian defence forces' need for light multi-role helicopters. Importantly, it marks a decisive move towards establishing a globally competitive base of helicopter manufacture in India.
