Army Hospital R&R Achieves Milestone with First Robotic Custom Laser Cataract Surgery Using ALLY System
In a remarkable advancement for military healthcare, the Army Hospital Research and Referral (AHRR) achieved a historic milestone on August 28, 2025, performing India’s first Robotic Custom Laser Cataract Surgery using the state-of-the-art ALLY Adaptive Cataract Treatment System. With this achievement, AHRR becomes the first government institute in India and only the second in South Asia to adopt this cutting-edge technology.
The breakthrough procedure, conducted by Brigadier SK Mishra, involved a 61-year-old patient and marked the Ophthalmology Department’s entry into the world of robotic, bladeless, and computer-guided eye surgery. Known as Femto-second Laser Assisted Cataract Surgery (FLACS), this technique represents a major evolution beyond conventional cataract surgery. While traditional methods remain effective, FLACS enhances precision by automating critical steps such as corneal incisions, capsulotomy, and cataract fragmentation, all at the micron level.
The integration of FLACS at AHRR highlights the Armed Forces’ ongoing commitment to providing advanced, safe, and highly effective healthcare for personnel and their families. By combining robotics with laser precision, the procedure ensures optimal visual outcomes, a crucial consideration in military medicine.
This achievement comes under the visionary guidance of Raksha Mantri Shri Rajnath Singh, Chief of Army Staff General Upendra Dwivedi, and Director General Armed Forces Medical Services Surgeon Vice Admiral Arti Sarin, reinforcing AHRR’s reputation for clinical excellence and innovation in eye care.
With this pioneering surgery, AHRR has set a new benchmark in ophthalmic care, ensuring that India’s armed forces have access to the latest advancements in medical technology.
