From Crown to Combat: Lt. Kashish Methwani Rejected Harvard for the Indian Army

Lt. Kashish Methwani

A Story of Purpose Over Prestige

Some people chase success, but a few choose purpose. Lieutenant Kashish Methwani is one of them. A former beauty queen, brilliant student, and national achiever, she made a bold decision—to reject a PhD offer from Harvard University and join the Indian Army.

Her journey shows that true success is not just about fame or global opportunities, but about serving something bigger than yourself.

Early Life and Family Background

Kashish Methwani was born on 9 January 2001 in Ulhasnagar near Mumbai and raised in Pune. She comes from a family that values education and service.

Her father, Dr. Gurmukh Das Methwani, worked as a scientist in the Ministry of Defence, and her mother, Shobha Methwani, is a teacher. She is the first woman in her family to join the armed forces.

Academic Excellence and the Harvard Decision

Kashish completed her Master’s degree in Biotechnology from Savitribai Phule Pune University and worked on neuroscience research at IISc Bengaluru.

Her strong academic record earned her a PhD offer from Harvard University. But she chose a different path. Instead of global recognition, she chose the Indian Army—a life of discipline, service, and purpose.

More Than Just Academics

Kashish is a true all-rounder. She is:

  • A national-level pistol shooter
  • A trained Bharatanatyam dancer
  • A tabla player
  • Active in sports and debates

During the COVID-19 pandemic, she also started an NGO called Critical Cause to spread awareness about blood and organ donation.

NCC Journey and Inspiration

Her journey towards the armed forces began with the NCC Air Wing. In 2021, she participated in the Republic Day Parade in Delhi and won the All India Best Cadet Award.

This achievement became a turning point and strengthened her dream of joining the Army.

From Beauty Queen to Soldier

In 2023, she won the title of Miss International India. While this opened doors to modelling and acting, she chose not to follow that path.

For her, the crown was just a milestone—not the final goal. Her real aim was always to serve the nation.

Cracking CDS and OTA Success

Kashish cleared the CDS exam in 2024 with an impressive All India Rank 2.

She then joined OTA Chennai, where she underwent tough military training. During training, she achieved:

  • AAD Medal for commissioning into Army Air Defence
  • Gold Medal in March and Shoot Competition
  • Sikh Light Infantry Regiment Medal
  • Highest shooting score at the academy
  • Drill and Discipline Badge
  • Appointment as Battalion Under Officer
  • Appointment as Academy Under Officer (highest cadet appointment)
  • Selection for Rashtriya Dhwaj Toli during the pipping ceremony
  • Zero punishments throughout training

Her performance showed her discipline, leadership, and dedication.

Commissioning into the Indian Army

On 6 September 2025, she was commissioned as a Lieutenant in the Indian Army.

She joined the Army Air Defence Regiment and is currently serving in an operational unit in North India, protecting the nation from aerial threats.

A True Inspiration

Kashish Methwani’s journey—from scientist to beauty queen to Army officer—redefines success. She proved that you don’t have to choose just one path; you can excel in many and still follow your true calling.

Her story inspires young people, especially women, to dream big, work hard, and choose purpose over comfort.

Conclusion

“From Crown to Combat” is not just a title—it is her reality.

By rejecting Harvard and choosing the Indian Army, Kashish Methwani showed that real success lies in serving the nation. Her journey is a powerful reminder that purpose is always greater than prestige.
