Indian Army Departs for France to Join French Counterparts for 8th Edition of Joint Exercise SHAKTI
The Indian Army has set out officially to France to attend the 8th edition of Exercise SHAKTI, a bilateral military exercise aimed at boosting defence relations between India and France. This year's edition takes place from 18th June to 1st July 2025 at Camp Larzac, La Cavalerie, a large French military camp.
The Indian contingent comprises 90 men, mostly from a battalion of the Jammu and Kashmir Rifles, as well as representatives of other arms and services. Their French counterparts — also a 90-man team — come from the prestigious 13th Foreign Legion Half-Brigade (13th DBLE).
Exercise SHAKTI is a biennial military exercise held every two years with the aim of enhancing operational coordination and mutual learning among the ground forces of the two countries. The 2025 event focuses on joint operations in semi-urban terrain, customized specifically based on scenarios set in Chapter VII of the United Nations Charter dealing with peace enforcement missions.
During the exercise, military personnel from the two countries will undergo tactical training exercises, share combat procedures and methods (TTPs), and utilize advanced military hardware, allowing both sides to improve their combat preparedness and responsiveness to changing battlefield situations.
A much more than training exercise, Exercise SHAKTI is a wonderful opportunity to develop professional relationships, team cohesion, and mutual esteem between French and Indian soldiers. It also indicates the larger goal of promoting defence cooperation and strategic partnership between the two nations.
As geopolitical environments shift, these top-level bilateral maneuvers not only increase military coordination but also reaffirm India and France's mutual interest in regional and international peace.
