Indian Navy's First Training Squadron Calls on Mombasa, Kenya
The First Training Squadron (1TS) of the Indian Navy has another milestone in overseas deployment with a port visit to Mombasa, Kenya, on 25 September 2025. The Squadron, consisting of INS Tir, INS Sujata, INS Shardul, and Indian Coast Guard Ship Sarathi, was warmly received by the Kenya Navy, as well as the Defence Advisor and the Acting High Commissioner of India.
Strengthening Regional Maritime Ties
Deployment of the First Training Squadron highlights India's resolve towards developing greater naval interaction in the South West Indian Ocean Region. The ships had previously made visits to Seychelles, Mauritius, La Réunion, and Mozambique during their long-distance training deployment.
On the visit to Mombasa, officials from the two navies will be involved in far-reaching professional interactions and social engagements. They include the conduct of joint training exercises, a Maritime Partnership Exercise (MPX), and a Passage Exercise (PASSEX) to boost interoperability and operational acquaintance.

Cultural and Community Engagement
In addition to maritime coordination, the port visit includes activities that underscore people-to-people connections. Sailors from both nations will have a combined yoga session and a combined band performance by the Indian Navy and Kenya Navy. Moreover, outreach activities in Mombasa will establish goodwill with the community.
Building the Spirit of MAHASAGAR
The First Training Squadron visit demonstrates India's vision of greater maritime cooperation to MAHASAGAR — Mutual and Holistic Advancement for Security and Growth Across Regions. This vision focuses not merely on the protection of sea lanes but on fostering inclusive growth, cooperation, and people-to-people contact across the Indian Ocean Region.
The call at Mombasa reaffirms the Indian Navy as a predictable maritime ally and deepens ties of friendship and cooperation with Kenya, upholding common interests in peace, stability, and prosperity in the region.
