Defence Diplomacy: IMA to Host Sri Lankan Army Chief AS reviewing officer
The prestigious Passing Out Parade (POP) of the Indian Military Academy (IMA) is all set to take place on June 14, 2025, at the iconic Chetwode Drill Square in Dehradun. This ceremonial event, known for its military precision and grandeur, marks a significant milestone in the journey of gentleman cadets who will soon be commissioned as officers into the Indian Army and allied foreign services.
Adding a touch of strategic diplomacy to this year’s event, General Vikum Liyanage Lasantha Rodrigo, the Chief of the Sri Lankan Army, will attend the POP as the Chief Guest.

He is scheduled to arrive in Dehradun on June 13, ahead of the grand occasion.
India has followed a long-standing tradition of inviting top military officials from friendly neighbouring countries to attend such ceremonial events. This symbolic gesture is part of India’s defence diplomacy efforts, which aim to strengthen military-to-military ties and promote regional cooperation.
In fact, in December 2024, the Chief of the Nepal Army graced the IMA POP as the chief guest—underscoring India’s commitment to fostering strategic partnerships in South Asia.
The decision to invite General Rodrigo holds particular significance in the current geopolitical climate, especially as China’s footprint continues to expand in the Indian Ocean Region (IOR).
With Sri Lanka being a key maritime neighbour, such gestures play a vital role in deepening defence cooperation and maintaining regional stability.
The IMA shares a special bond with the Sri Lankan armed forces. Over the years, many Sri Lankan cadets have trained at the Indian Military Academy and have gone on to serve with distinction in their national defence forces.
General Rodrigo’s presence is expected to further bolster bilateral military ties and reaffirm the shared history of defence collaboration between the two nations.
Meanwhile, preparations for the parade are in full swing at the IMA campus. The cadets are undergoing intense training and drill practice to perfect their formations and showcase the discipline that defines the Indian Army.
The Passing Out Parade is not just a display of ceremonial excellence, but also a moment of pride and culmination for cadets who have undergone rigorous military training, leadership grooming, and character building.
As the nation awaits this majestic occasion, the inclusion of a distinguished international military leader as the chief guest highlights both the prestige of the Indian Military Academy and the strategic depth of India’s regional defence outreach.
