NDA-149 and TES- 48 SSB Interview 5 Days Experience Explained by Aayrash Pandey

Aaryash Pandey hails from the Pilibhit District of Uttar Pradesh. He was recommended on the first attempt for NDA 149 Course from 3 AFSB Gandhinagar. He was recommended not just for the NDA 149 course but also for the TES-48.  Let us know about his five days of SSB experience and his learnings from 3 AFSB Gandhinagar. His Five Days of SSB Experience has been mentioned day-wise here.

#Day One (Reporting, OIR, PP&DT, and Psychology Tests)

Aaryash Pandey along with 112 other candidates reported at 3 AFSB Gandhinagar on 15h August 2022 at 6:30 am as instructed in the call letter. Upon Arriving at the selection center, Candidates were sent to the documentation process where their all documents were checked. After completing the documentation, candidates were asked to have breakfast in the mess.

After having breakfast, Aryash and the other 112 candidates reported in OIR Hall, where they were given two OIR booklets one by one that contained verbal and non-verbal questions. OIR Test for Aryash was relatively easy for him as he did a lot of practice for the OIR Test at Centurion Defence Academy where he took guidance for his SSB Interview Preparation. Aaryash Pandey says that OIR Sets were easy as compared to what we used to practice at the Centurion Defence Academy.

After the OIR Test, They were taken to PP&DT Hall, contrary to normal PP&DT, the picture shown to Aaryash was not very much hazy. He and the other candidates could easily observe the picture. Aryash says that most of the candidates perceived 4 characters in the picture but he identified 5 characters that were actually there. He says that Shishir Sir had guided him to observe the PP&DT Picture properly and not miss any character. He did the same and made a story around those five characters and added some meaningful actions.

After writing their stories, candidates were divided into groups of 15 candidates. After forming a group, candidates were made to sit in a semi-circle manner and asked to narrate their stories one by one. Aaryash narrated his story in a short and crisp manner. He added all points of his story and completed his narration in one minute. After the narration, group discussion, and during group discussion, the fish market started. He ignored the fish market and did not take part in it. He presented 3-4 points and persuaded his group to arrive at a common story.

After narration and GD, candidates were asked to have lunch. After having lunch all candidates were asked to report in the hall where the result was to be announced. Aaryash was already sure of his screening and when the results were announced he was screened in along with 74 other candidates. He was allotted chest number 07. This number was his favorite number as this number is the jersey number of Ronaldo and Dhoni.

Psychology Tests

As you must be aware that AFSB Psychology Tests are conducted on the same day. In his AFSB also, Psychology Tests were scheduled on the same day and tests started around 4-5 pm. Aaryash says that he had done so much practice for psychology tests at Centurion Defence Academy under the guidance of Sir Shishir Dixit.

In TAT, he recalls that all pictures were easy and stories could be formed easily around them. He wrote stories on all of them including the blank slide. In WAT, he completed 56 words and missed some. But his focus was on quality not on quantity. He followed the same thing in SRT also and focused on writing good responses rather than completing the test. In his SRT test, SRT questions were short and easy that could be answered easily.

In the Self Description Test, he was already prepared and tried to write only honest responses. Shishir Sir’s guidance helped him a lot as he was trained at Centurion Defence Academy about writing self-description tests. He answered every question in the Self Description Test truthfully.

#Day Two (GTO)

Before the second day, Aryash and the other candidates were already informed about the GTO on the second day. All candidates reported to GTO Ground at 7:30 am and they were divided into groups. In his group, there were 8 candidates. On the first day of GTO, only indoor activities took place. Their first test was a group discussion test in which they chose an international and discussed that very smoothly.

Their second test was a group planning exercise (GPE), during which they were given many problems on a model and they had to find practical solutions for those problems. During the GPE, he wrote good solutions to all problems but missed 2-3 problems. But he thought that one test will not decide his selection. That is why he should focus on other tasks.

During his outdoor GTO Tests, it was raining very heavily in Gandhinagar. But his outdoor GTO was not canceled. They reported in the GTO ground and their outdoor GTO Tests started. During their progressive group tasks, he cooperated with the group and kept on giving solutions wherever his group was stuck. During his command task, he struggled a bit because the obstacle in his command task was painted only in yellow ( which indicates ‘out of bounds for supporting material’). But he explained his idea to the GTO and GTO  accepted the idea.

In the Individual Obstacle Test, 3 Obstacles were removed as it was raining very heavily. He could complete only 4 obstacles and other candidates completed all 8 obstacles and repeated some more. It was a sad experience for him but he reminded himself again that only one task will not decide his results. During his Lecturette he chose to speak on ‘Indian Culture’ and narrated this topic in a very well manner.

#Day Three (Free Day)

On the third day of his five-day SSB process, no tests were scheduled. He enjoyed it with his friends and they sang songs together. One of his friends taught him to play table tennis also.

#Day Four (Personal Interview)

On his fourth day, his interview was scheduled. In the morning he depressed up nicely and was ready for the interview. During his interview, questions on his achievements, daily life, and studies were asked. Some questions were asked from military awareness also. A common question was being asked from all the candidates, so at the end of the personal interview when he was asked “do you have any questions”? Aryash asked the interviewing officer, “ What motivated you to join the Indian Air Force”? Some more basic questions related to his background were asked and the interview ended soon.

#Day Five (Conference)

On the basis of his overall performance, he was confident of being recommended. But Aryash was a little anxious on the day of the conference. His conference lasted only for 30 seconds and some questions related to his stay at SSB were asked in these 30 seconds. After the conference, the results were announced. Though he was confident of his selection, his heart was beating very fast. When his turn came and his chest number was announced, he stopped listening to other chest numbers and was very very happy. After the announcement of the results, he had to undergo documentation where he filled out at least 500 forms.
