INS Nistar Delivered to Navy

Indian Navy Takes Delivery of First Indigenous Diving Support Vessel 'Nistar'

As a significant milestone towards enhanced Indian marine operations and indigenization, the Indian Navy has formally taken delivery of 'Nistar', its first indigenously developed and constructed Diving Support Vessel (DSV). Hindustan Shipyard Limited delivered the ship on 8th July 2025 in Visakhapatnam.

Proudly Made in India

'Nistar' has been created with roughly 75% indigenous constituents, indicative of increasing Indian competence in defence production. Conceived to IRS standards, the ship aligns with the Aatmanirbhar Bharat and Make in India missions by advancing indigenous engineering and
shipbuilding.

Why the Name 'Nistar'?

The term 'Nistar', which has a Sanskrit origin, translates as rescue, relief, or freedom. The name signifies the ship's main function in underwater rescue missions and deep-sea assistance, representing hope and safety for the downtrodden during mission-critical situations.

Key Features and Capabilities

With a length of 118 meters and an almost 10,000-ton displacement, Nistar is ready for sophisticated underwater operations. It can accommodate Deep Sea Saturation Diving to 300 meters and has a Side Diving System for operations at lighter depths (up to 75 meters).

It also serves as the primary platform for launching the Deep Submergence Rescue Vessel (DSRV), an important system used to rescue submarine crews during emergencies. The ship also accommodates Remotely Operated Vehicles (ROVs), which have the ability to conduct underwater operations and recovery operations with depths of up to 1000 meters.

Why This Matters

It is one of the few nations with such sophisticated ships. India joins that select group now with Nistar, enhancing the country's naval power with a potent capability for submarine rescue, deep-sea diving, and underwater operations.

'Nistar' is not just a ship — it's an emblem of India's advancement, resolve, and indigenous capability in defence and maritime technology.
