Kerala Tops MEE Ranking
Kerala has been recognised for exemplary wildlife conservation, sharing the top spot with Chandigarh in the Management Effectiveness Evaluation (2020–2025) by the Union Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change. Out of 438 assessed protected areas, Kerala achieved a mean score of 76.22%, with Eravikulam National Park scoring a remarkable 92.97%. Other top performers include Mathikettan Shola and Chinnar Wildlife Sanctuaries. Despite this, challenges like urban pollution, biotic pressure, and human-wildlife conflict persist. The report recommends habitat connectivity, improved monitoring, and community participation to strengthen conservation efforts and promote eco-tourism.
Gender Gap Index 2025
India's rank in the World Economic Forum’s Global Gender Gap Index has fallen to 131 out of 148 countries, primarily due to declining political empowerment, despite progress in education, health, and economic participation. Women’s representation in Parliament and ministerial roles has dropped, highlighting persistent barriers to leadership. Though the 2023 law mandating 33% reservation for women in legislatures (effective from 2029) promises progress, its temporary nature raises concerns. Historical data shows inconsistent representation, with women making up just 9% of MLAs in 2023. Despite growing numbers of women voters, political parties remain reluctant to field women in competitive seats. True empowerment will require stronger party commitment and a pathway from the grassroots to higher offices.
India’s Coastline Measurement
India’s coastline has officially expanded from 7,516 km to 11,098 km due to advanced mapping techniques, though the physical landscape remains unchanged. This 50% increase stems from high-resolution GIS-based measurements, replacing outdated 1970s methods. The change highlights the coastline paradox—coastline length varies with measurement precision. A reassessment also revised the offshore island count to 1,389. While primarily academic, these updates enhance administrative planning, security, and coastal regulation efforts. India now mandates a coastline reassessment every decade to account for natural and human-induced changes.
Santhal Hul
The Santhal Hul, marking its 170th anniversary in 2025, was a landmark tribal uprising against British colonial rule, commemorated as ‘Hul Diwas’ on June 30 in Jharkhand. Led by Sidhu and Kanhu in 1855, the Santhal Rebellion arose from exploitation by British officials and zamindars, following broken promises of land in the Damin-i-Koh region. Though ultimately suppressed by superior British forces, the rebellion ignited future resistance movements and highlighted the oppression of tribal communities. Part of a broader legacy of tribal uprisings, including the Munda and Paika rebellions, it remains a powerful symbol of indigenous resistance and rights.
Sugamya Bharat App
Launched in 2021, the Sugamya Bharat App (SBA) is a key initiative by the Government of India to enhance accessibility for persons with disabilities and the elderly. Revamped for better user experience, the app now features an intuitive interface, an AI-powered chatbot, and updates on government schemes. With over 83,000 downloads and 14,358 users by June 2025, it empowers citizens to report accessibility issues via geo-tagged photos. Of 2,705 complaints received, 1,897 have been resolved, showcasing its impact. The app continues to evolve, supporting India’s vision of a barrier-free, inclusive society.
NATO Summit 2025
The 2025 NATO summit, led by President Donald Trump, introduced a controversial 5% GDP defence spending target, significantly raising the bar from the previous 2%. This includes 3.5% for core defence and 1.5% for related sectors like infrastructure. Many member nations, especially those spending below 2%, face challenges in meeting this goal. The summit also marked a shift away from supporting Ukraine, with NATO halting military aid and denying Ukraine membership. Additionally, the alliance adopted a softer stance on Russia, reflecting Trump's approach, raising concerns about NATO’s unity, strategic priorities, and long-term commitment to collective defence.
Major Infrastructure Projects in Jammu and Kashmir
The Government of India has approved 19 infrastructure projects worth Rs 10,637 crore in Jammu and Kashmir, focusing on enhanced connectivity and security. Four key projects—the Pir Ki Gali Tunnel (Rs 3,830 crore), Sadhna Tunnel (Rs 3,330 crore), Zaznar-Shopian Road (Rs 836 crore), and Trehgam-Chamkote Road (Rs 966 crore)—stand out for their strategic value. These projects aim to provide all-weather access to border areas, reduce reliance on vulnerable routes like NH44, and improve military logistics. The Border Roads Organisation will lead tunnel construction to fast-track execution and strengthen regional infrastructure.
Why Kerala is the First Stop of the Southwest Monsoon?
The southwest monsoon, vital to India’s climate and agriculture, begins in Kerala—thanks to its coastal position and the Western Ghats—which trigger early rainfall. Typically starting around June 1, the monsoon sometimes arrives earlier, as seen recently. Moisture-laden winds from the Arabian Sea move north and east after hitting Kerala, covering the entire country within a month. India sees two monsoon seasons: the Southwest (June–September) and Northeast (October–December). The rains hold cultural and agricultural significance, with festivals like Onam and Teej marking their arrival. The IMD closely tracks monsoon progress, which many Indians follow with great anticipation.
Shaktipeeth Expressway
Approved on June 24, 2025, the ₹20,787 crore Shaktipeeth Expressway aims to connect 12 districts from Wardha to the Maharashtra-Goa border, reducing Nagpur-Goa travel time from 18 to 8 hours. Spanning 802 km, it links 18 Shakti Peethas to boost religious tourism. Implemented by MSRDC with ₹12,000 crore from HUDCO, the project faces strong farmer opposition over land acquisition and alleged corruption. Environmental clearances were delayed but now granted for less-contested stretches. While promising economic and tourism benefits, the expressway raises concerns about displacement and fair compensation for affected farmers.
