1. India’s Longest Rail Tunnel

On April 16, 2025, India broke through its longest rail tunnel at Janasu, Uttarakhand, under the 125 km Rishikesh-Karnaprayag Rail Project. Using TBM ‘Shakti’ and NATM, the project is over 70% complete and will cut travel time to Char Dham, boosting tourism and disaster resilience by December 2026.

2. MAHASAGAR Initiative

India’s MAHASAGAR initiative strengthens regional security and cooperation under the 'Neighbourhood First' policy, building on SAGAR to cement its role in the Indian Ocean Region. Through naval exercises, partnerships, and Blue Economy efforts, India promotes stability despite challenges like vessel dependence and political tensions.

3. Hydrogen-Based Explosive Device

China tested a hydrogen-based explosive developed by the 705 Research Institute, marking a major advance in non-nuclear military tech. Using magnesium hydride, the 2-kg device creates a fireball 15 times longer than TNT, ideal for precision strikes. Mass production has begun, supporting China's military modernisation amid regional tensions.

5. 4G and 5G Connections in High-Altitude Army Posts

The Indian Army has brought 4G and 5G connectivity to remote areas of Ladakh, including Siachen, Galwan, and Daulat Beg Oldie, boosting communication, security, and development. In partnership with telecom providers, the project aims to empower communities, promote tourism, and improve healthcare and education.

6. Exercise Desert Flag-10

The Indian Air Force is participating in Exercise Desert Flag-10 in the UAE (April 21–May 8, 2025) with Mig-29s and Jaguars, joining forces with the U.S., U.K., and France. The drills boost interoperability and reflect India’s growing defence ties with the UAE and broader Gulf collaboration initiatives.

7. Exercise Dustlik 2025

The sixth Exercise Dustlik between India and Uzbekistan began on April 16, 2025, in Pune, focusing on counter-terrorism, hybrid warfare, and joint operations. Featuring Jat Regiment troops and Uzbek forces, the drills enhance interoperability through tactical missions, drone reconnaissance, and Special Forces involvement.

8. India’s Defence Export Protocol

India’s Ministry of External Affairs reaffirmed strict export controls amid arms supply allegations to Russia. Targeting ₹50,000 crore in defence exports by 2029, India has already achieved ₹23,622 crore in FY 2024–25, expanding exports like the Dornier 228 and BrahMos to over 100 countries.

9. India-U.S. HADR Exercise Tiger Triumph

The fourth India-U.S. tri-service exercise, Tiger Triumph (April 1–13, 2025), focuses on joint HADR operations, developing SOPs, and setting up a Combined Coordination Centre. Featuring naval ships from both nations, the exercise includes training in Visakhapatnam, maritime drills near Kakinada, and a joint medical camp.

10. Operation Brahma

After a major earthquake in Myanmar, India launched Operation Brahma, deploying medical teams, NDRF personnel, and relief supplies under its ‘Neighbourhood First’ policy. A 60-bed trauma centre is being set up in Mandalay, reinforcing India’s role as a regional first responder.

11. Golden Dome Missile Defence Shield

The Golden Dome missile defence shield announced by former U.S. President Trump aims to counter ballistic, hypersonic, and cruise missiles using space sensors and advanced interceptors. Inspired by Israel’s Iron Dome and THAAD, it targets tech demonstrations by late 2026, with private sector collaboration underway.

12. India-US Underwater Domain Awareness Cooperation

India and the U.S. have launched the Autonomous Systems Industry Alliance (ASIA) to co-produce underwater surveillance tech, countering China’s naval presence. A new 2025–2035 defence framework is underway, boosting India’s anti-submarine capabilities and strengthening Quad interoperability.

13. Fort William Renamed as Vijay Durg

The Indian Army’s Eastern Command HQ, Fort William, has been renamed Vijay Durg to honour indigenous military history. Alongside, Kitchener House and St. George’s Gate became Manekshaw House and Shivaji Gate, supporting India’s broader decolonisation efforts while preserving the fort’s museum and war memorials.

 

April 2025 Current Affairs

1. EUNAVFOR Operation ATALANTA

EUNAVFOR Operation ATALANTA, active in the Western Indian Ocean and Red Sea since 2008, combats piracy, protects WFP vessels, and monitors illegal activities. A joint exercise with the Indian Navy is set for May 2025. With its mandate extended to 2027, ATALANTA focuses on maritime security, piracy deterrence, and broader EU initiatives, working closely with regional and international partners.

2. Mission Jeewan Raksha

Under “Mission Jeewan Raksha,” RPF saved 1,650 lives in four years, returned lost goods worth ₹23 crores, and rescued over 11,900 children. They earned nine Jeewan Raksha medals and run 132 Child Help Desks across India under the Ministry of Railways.

3. France “Vaccine Pass”

France has approved a stricter COVID-19 Vaccine Pass, requiring proof of vaccination for those over 12 to access public spaces and transport. It mirrors Germany’s 2G rules. Italy mandates vaccines for those over 50, while the EU uses a Digital COVID Certificate for travel. Globally, several countries have made vaccination compulsory after the Delta variant surge; India has not.

4. Study on Children's Asthma and Traffic-related pollution

A new study links traffic-related air pollution, especially nitrogen dioxide (NO₂), to around 2 million new paediatric asthma cases globally in 2019, mostly in urban areas. Despite cleaner air in Europe and the U.S., pollution is rising in South Asia, Africa, and the Middle East. Urban air pollution also caused 1.8 million excess deaths in 2019. Reducing fossil fuel transport is crucial for healthier cities and fewer asthma cases.

5. What is ‘Aquamation’?

Desmond Tutu’s body underwent aquamation, an eco-friendly cremation method using water and alkali, reflecting his commitment to the environment. Aquamation uses less energy and produces fewer emissions than traditional cremation.

6. World Social Report 2025

The World Social Report 2025 highlights rising economic insecurity and inequality, with over 2.8 billion people living on $2.15–$6.85 daily and 60% fearing job loss. It calls for urgent reforms based on equity, security, and solidarity, warning that without action, achieving the SDGs by 2030 is unlikely. The report, published by the UN and UNU-WIDER, stresses the need for transformative solutions to rebuild trust and social cohesion.

7. AI Kiran Initiative

AI Kiran is a national initiative to boost women’s leadership in AI, offering mentorship, funding, and recognition to over 250 women leaders. Co-led by the PSA’s Office, Verix, and INK Women, it aims to build an inclusive AI ecosystem in India.

8. M4 Carbine Assault Rifles

Terrorists in Kashmir are using U.S.-made M4 carbines, likely sourced from Afghan black markets after the Taliban takeover. This trend, aided by Pakistan’s ISI, signals rising threats and greater operational sophistication.

9. Krishna River Faces Severe Drought Issues

The Krishna River, vital for northern Karnataka, is drying up early, causing agricultural and drinking water crises. Karnataka has requested water releases from Maharashtra, but no response has come yet. Climate change, delayed water-sharing agreements, and ecological challenges threaten the river’s future, demanding urgent sustainable management.

10. India’s Poverty Statistics (2011-2023)

India has lifted 171 million people out of extreme poverty between 2011 and 2023, with rates falling from 16.2% to 2.3%, according to a World Bank report. Rural and urban poverty gaps have narrowed, and India has transitioned to a lower-middle-income status. While multidimensional poverty and consumption inequality have improved, income inequality has widened. Employment growth has strengthened, with urban unemployment dropping to its lowest since 2017-18.

11. Similipal National Park

Similipal has been declared Odisha’s largest national park, covering 845.7 sq km and becoming India’s 107th national park. Known for its rich biodiversity and part of a tiger reserve, the designation strengthens conservation efforts despite challenges from human habitation. The move aims to protect ecosystems while supporting tribal communities and sustainable development.
