India Army Sets Up New Military Base in Assam Amid Rising Border Tensions

New Military Base in Assam

Military Base in Assam Strengthens India's Border Security and Intelligence Operations

The Indian Army has established a fresh military base in Dhubri district, Assam, near the India–Bangladesh border, marking a major development in strengthening the north-eastern security infrastructure of India. Dubbed the Lachit Borphukan Military Station, it is strategically positioned near Bamunigaon, about 40 kilometres from the border, to ensure enhanced surveillance, intelligence collection, and rapid deployment along this sensitive region.

This is the first major Army installation in western Assam, sited near the Siliguri Corridor, the narrow and strategically vital link that joins India's North East to the Indian mainland. Analysts consider the move a calibrated response to the changed regional dynamics, particularly since Bangladesh's caretaker government came into being.

Intelligence assessments have indicated increasing proximity between Bangladesh and Pakistan, besides reports of Chinese activity near Lalmonirhat airfield, which is uncomfortably close to the strategic corridor.

Lieutenant General R.C. Tiwari, General Officer Commanding-in-Chief, Eastern Command, laid the foundation stone for Lachit Borphukan Military Station. The base will fall under the Tezpur-based IV Corps and initially house around 1,200 to 1,500 troops. Pre-fabricated structures are being deployed to achieve quick operationalization, while the Assam government is facilitating fast-track land transfers.

Lieutenant Colonel Mahendra Rawat, the Defence Spokesperson, says the new station will further enhance the operational capability and infrastructure of the Indian Army to keep a close watch on cross-border movements. He added that the base will provide a chance for safety and stability for local people who have been threatened by cross-border criminal and militant actions many times in the past.

The station will be home to a para-commando unit, underscoring its offensive and reconnaissance roles. It will also serve as a regional intelligence hub, incorporating human intelligence and signal intelligence to help combat smuggling, infiltration, and extremist activities across the porous border.

Brigadier Ranjit Kumar Borthakur (Retd) said, "The caretaker government in Bangladesh has adopted a much tougher stance toward India," and these recent Bangladesh–Pakistan engagements are "ominous indicators" that the polarization of forces in the region has already started.

The new Dhubri base is likely to add to command and control redundancy besides complementing other military facilities at Cooch Behar and Tamulpur to increase the Army's operational depth in the region. Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma hailed the move, stating that Dhubri was a "sensitive district that requires a strong, permanent military presence." He spoke on how the project demonstrated positive civil–military coordination in reinforcing national security. Besides its tactical significance, Lachit Borphukan Military Station helps to address the larger effort put in by Assam in controlling illegal migration, smuggling, and extremist infiltration. It has been named after one of Assam's most celebrated historical warriors and symbolizes India's commitment to defending its territorial integrity. When finally operational, it would become an important node in the country's counter-infiltration and surveillance network for ensuring the security and resilience of the north-eastern frontier.
