IWI to Supply First Batch of 40,000 LMGs to India Next Year; Large-Scale Deliveries Set for 2026
Israel’s defence giant Israel Weapon Industries (IWI) is gearing up to deliver the first batch of 40,000 Light Machine Guns (LMGs) to India early next year, marking a significant leap in Indo-Israeli defence cooperation and India’s mission to modernise its security forces.
IWI CEO Shuki Schwartz confirmed that all tests, trials, and government approvals for last year’s multi-year LMG contract are now complete. With the production licence secured, IWI is fully prepared to begin deliveries at the start of next year. Although the agreement spans five years, Schwartz hinted that the pace of delivery may be accelerated based on India’s operational needs.
Massive CQB Carbine Deal in Final Stages
Alongside the LMG supply, IWI is close to concluding a major contract for 1,70,000 next-generation Close Quarters Battle (CQB) carbines for Indian forces.
– Bharat Forge is set to supply 60% of these weapons
– IWI will provide the remaining 40% through PLR Systems, its joint venture with the Adani Group
The contract is currently in the pre-signing phase and is expected to be finalised either by the end of this year or early 2026.
Arbel Technology: The Next Big Step in Smart Weaponry
IWI is also exploring deeper tech collaboration with Indian agencies through its advanced Arbel technology—a computerised weapon enhancement system designed to allow firing only when a soldier is perfectly on target. Using sophisticated algorithms, this system enhances accuracy and reduces accidental or off-target fire.
If approved, Arbel technology will be co-produced in India via PLR Systems, giving another boost to India’s Make in India and defence indigenisation goals.
A Longstanding Partnership Strengthened Further
IWI has been a trusted supplier to India’s Ministry of Home Affairs and multiple security agencies for years, providing pistols, rifles, and machine guns under various contracts. The company maintains an annual capacity of delivering tens of thousands of units, ensuring it can match India’s evolving operational requirements.
Despite global supply chain disruptions and export limitations from some European nations, Schwartz stressed that Israel’s defence manufacturing ecosystem is robust enough to continue supporting partner countries without interruptions.
A Strategic Boost to India’s Defence Readiness
With fresh deals, advanced technology, and deeper industrial cooperation, India is strengthening:
– its inventory of modern weapon systems,
– its domestic manufacturing capability,
– and its readiness for future security challenges.
As IWI expands its footprint in India, the Indo-Israeli defence partnership is clearly stepping into a more powerful, tech-driven era—one that aligns with India’s long-term vision of a modern, self-reliant defence ecosystem.
