Indian Army to Strengthen Air Defence with Indigenous QRSAM in Major Procurement Move
In a significant boost to national security, the Indian Army is preparing to deploy three regiments of the domestically developed Quick Reaction Surface-to-Air Missile (QRSAM) system. The Defence Ministry is finalizing approval for this ₹30,000 crore acquisition, which will significantly enhance India's aerial protection capabilities along sensitive border areas.
Developed by DRDO scientists, this cutting-edge missile system features a responsive 30-kilometer engagement range and advanced mobile deployment capabilities. Its induction will address crucial operational requirements for short-to-medium range air defence, working in tandem with existing Akash and MRSAM systems.
Recent intensive testing in a variety of conditions has established the system's fighting efficiency, including successful testing of its cutting-edge active array radar and multiple target capabilities. Its shoot-on-the-move capability gives the system key tactical strengths in forward deployment.
This success is a key milestone for India's defense indigenization effort, overcoming earlier technological hurdles for mobility and detection systems. The QRSAM program is a strategic leap in India's path to self-reliance in cutting-edge defense technologies, decades after international sanctions restricted access to sophisticated systems.
The induction will significantly enhance India's multi-layered air defense network, providing swift response capabilities against advanced aerial threats in high-risk operational areas.
