DRDO & Indian Navy Successfully Conduct First Salvo Launch of Naval Anti-Ship Missile

DRDO Indian Navy anti ship missile

Major Milestone in India’s Defence Technology

The Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) and the Indian Navy have successfully carried out the first-ever salvo launch of the Naval Anti-Ship Missile – Short Range (NASM-SR).

The test was conducted from a naval helicopter platform off the coast of the Bay of Bengal near Odisha.

What Happened During the Test

During the trial:

  • Two missiles were fired one after another from the same helicopter
  • This marked the first salvo launch of an air-launched anti-ship missile in India
  • All test objectives were successfully achieved

The missiles accurately hit their targets, including demonstrating the important waterline hit capability, which is critical for damaging enemy ships.

Advanced Tracking and Monitoring

The test was closely monitored using advanced systems at the Integrated Test Range, including:

  • Radar systems
  • Electro-optical sensors
  • Telemetry tracking

Senior scientists from DRDO, along with representatives from the Indian Navy and Indian Air Force, were present during the trial.

Key Features of NASM-SR Missile

The NASM-SR is an advanced, indigenously developed missile with powerful features:

  • Solid booster and long-burn sustainer for strong propulsion
  • Advanced seeker and avionics system
  • Fibre-optic gyroscope-based navigation system
  • Radio altimeter for accurate targeting
  • Two-way high-speed data link
  • Advanced control and guidance systems

These features make it highly effective for modern naval warfare.

Developed with Indigenous Efforts

The missile was developed by Research Centre Imarat along with other DRDO labs, including:

  • Defence Research and Development Laboratory
  • High Energy Materials Research Laboratory
  • Terminal Ballistics Research Laboratory
  • Integrated Test Range

The missile is now being produced with support from Indian industries and start-ups.

Leaders Praise the Achievement

Defence Minister Rajnath Singh congratulated DRDO, the Indian Navy, the Indian Air Force, and industry partners for this achievement.

DRDO Chairman Samir V Kamat also praised the teams involved in the successful test.

Conclusion

The successful launch of NASM-SR is a big step forward for India’s defence capabilities. It strengthens the Navy’s strike power and highlights India’s progress in developing advanced indigenous weapons systems.
