DRDO Unveils ‘Vikram VT-21’ Infantry Combat Vehicles, Army Induction Targeted by 2029

DRDO Unveils ‘Vikram VT-21’

Next-Gen IFVs ‘Vikram VT-21’ to Replace Ageing BMP-2 Fleet

Big Step Towards Army Modernisation

The Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) has introduced two new Infantry Combat Vehicles (ICVs) under the Vikram VT-21 programme—one tracked and one wheeled.

These vehicles are being developed to replace the old BMP-2 fleet, which has served the Indian Army for many years but is now outdated for modern warfare.

Why This Upgrade is Important

The BMP-2 has been the backbone of India’s mechanised infantry, but changing battlefield needs require more advanced, faster, and better-protected vehicles.

The Vikram VT-21 programme aims to bring cutting-edge technology and improved combat performance to the Army.

Advanced Features and Capabilities

The new ICVs are being developed by DRDO’s Vehicle Research and Development Establishment along with private industry partners.

Key features include:

  • AI-based target tracking and weapon selection
  • Advanced terrain mapping systems
  • Better mobility, protection, and firepower
  • Capability to fire Nag Mark 2
  • Indigenous 30mm ammunition
  • Amphibious capability for river and water crossings

These features make the vehicle highly suitable for modern battle conditions.

Designed for Future Warfare

The Vikram VT-21 has been designed after studying global platforms like:

  • Kurganets-25
  • Puma IFV
  • K21

It can carry up to 11 soldiers, including crew, with improved comfort and advanced onboard systems.

Trials and Induction Timeline

According to Samir V Kamat:

  • The vehicles will undergo detailed trials
  • Testing will be done in different terrains and weather conditions
  • The Army plans to induct them by 2029

Boost to ‘Aatmanirbhar Bharat’

This project supports India’s goal of self-reliance in defence by:

  • Promoting public-private partnerships
  • Encouraging Indian industries and startups
  • Transferring advanced technologies for domestic manufacturing

Conclusion

The Vikram VT-21 programme is a major step in upgrading the Indian Army’s mechanised forces. With modern technology, better protection, and higher firepower, these next-generation vehicles will prepare the Army for future, high-tech warfare.
