DRDO transfers three advanced materials technologies to the industry

Role of DRDO in Strengthening Atmanirbhar Bharat

The Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO), in its Defence Metallurgical Research Laboratory (DMRL) at Hyderabad, has formally transferred three advanced material technologies to industry partners of national importance. The documents of Licensing Agreement for Transfer of Technology (LAToT) were formally handed over by Dr. Samir V. Kamat, Secretary, Department of Defence R&D and Chairman, DRDO, in a function at DMRL on August 30, 2025.

The transferred technology is:

  • High-Strength Radomes Manufacturing – Transferred to BHEL, Jagdishpur, facilitating the indigenous manufacture of high-quality radomes that protect critical missile sensors. This will be instrumental in augmenting India's missile programs and improving self-reliance in defence systems.

  • DMR-1700 Defence Steel Sheets and Plates – Licensed to JSPL, Angul, these steel sheets and plates provide an unusual combination of ultra-high strength and excellent room temperature fracture toughness and are ideal for numerous defence applications.

  • DMR 249A HSLA Steel Plates for Naval Platforms – Transferred to BSP, Bhilai (SAIL), the material conforms to strict metallurgical and dimensional specifications to provide reliability and durability in the manufacture of sophisticated naval ships.

Dr. Kamat appreciated the R&D activities that enabled such technology transfers in his address. He acknowledged DMRL's initiative in forging robust industry-research partnerships and catalyzing innovations with a lasting long-term impact. The transfer is a benchmark in indigenous material development for strategic areas. With the collaboration of established industrial partners, DRDO hopes to expedite scaling and induction of such technologies for both strategic and business uses.

Adding further to DRDO's vibrant collaborative environment, an MoU was also inked between DMRL and the Ministry of Civil Aviation's Aircraft Accident Investigation Bureau (AAIB). This MoU will enable AAIB to utilize the facilities of DMRL, its expertise, and capabilities in its operations.

Dr. R.V. Hara Prasad, Director General (Naval Systems & Materials), Dr. Manu Korulla, Director General (Resource and Management), and Dr. R. Balamuralikrishnan, Director, DMRL, were present at the occasion.
