Major Progress in Hypersonic Technology
India’s Long-Range Anti-Ship Missile (LR-AShM), a hypersonic glide missile developed by the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO), is now close to entering the trial phase.
According to DRDO Chief Samir V Kamat, the project has reached an advanced stage, and initial tests are expected soon.
What is the LR-AShM Missile?
The LR-AShM is a next-generation hypersonic glide missile designed mainly for naval warfare.
- It can hit both moving and fixed targets
- It travels at hypersonic speeds (above Mach 5)
- It can strike targets at long ranges (around 1,500 km)
This makes it extremely difficult for enemy radar and air defence systems to detect or intercept.
Nearing Trial Phase
DRDO has confirmed that:
- The missile is in an advanced stage of development
- Initial trials are expected soon
- The glide missile version is progressing faster than other hypersonic variants
This marks a major step toward operational deployment.
Part of a Multi-Layered Strike Force
India is working on building a multi-layered strike capability, which includes:
- Hypersonic glide missiles like LR-AShM
- Hypersonic cruise missiles (scramjet-based)
- Long-range ballistic missiles
This combination will allow India to strike targets at different ranges with high speed and precision.
Why Hypersonic Missiles Matter
Hypersonic weapons are considered game-changers in modern warfare because:
- They travel faster than traditional missiles
- They can change direction mid-flight
- They are very hard to track and intercept
This gives India a strong strategic advantage.
Boost to India’s Defence Strength
The LR-AShM programme shows India’s rapid progress in advanced missile technology.
Its development places India among a small group of countries working on hypersonic weapons, strengthening both deterrence and naval strike capability.
Conclusion
With trials approaching, the LR-AShM missile represents the future of India’s strike power. Combined with other advanced systems, it will help build a strong, multi-layered defence and offensive capability for the country.
