Indian Army Secures IPR for New Coat Combat Design

Indian Army Patents IPR for new Digital-Print Coat Combat in a Bold Step towards Soldier Centric Modernisation

The latest power move down the road of future-ready transformation by the Indian Army is securing exclusive Intellectual Property Rights for its newly developed Coat Combat (Digital Print). And, honestly speaking, it is not mere uniform upgrade; it is a whole statement of intent.

Building on the momentum unleashed when it unveiled the redesigned digital-print combat uniform, the Army took another important step in its vision to level up soldier comfort, boost indigenous innovations, and redesign battlefield gear for the next era of warfare with the release of the New Coat Combat in January 2025.

What's different with this coat? It isn't some quick-fix textile tweak. NIFT New Delhi, working under the guidance of the Army Design Bureau, crafted this three-layered beast with advanced technical textiles, ergonomic precision, and vibes that scream both comfort and combat-readiness.

Made of materials designed to flex with the soldier rather than slowing him down, the coat allows for increased mobility and durability in climates that can range from icy heights to steamy jungles and dusty plains.

It was designed by the Indian Army, and they locked in the legal rights.

The Army now received full IPR protection from the Controller General of Patents, Designs, and Trademarks, Kolkata, under Design Application No. 449667-001, filed on 27 February 2025 and officially published on 07 October 2025.

The design and camouflage pattern are exclusive to the Indian Army. No lookalikes, no commercial rip-offs, no unauthorized manufacturing. Try playing around with it, and you are basically signing up for some legal heat under the Designs Act, 2000, Design Rules, 2001, and the Patents Act, 1970.

What's Inside This New-Age Coat Combat?

It was built like a tech upgrade: layer by layer.

Outer Layer: A digitally printed camouflage outerwear for rugged terrain, sharper concealment, and sheer operational grit.

Inner Jacket: Lightweight, breathable, insulated - giving warmth without turning movement into a workout.

The thermal base layer, where the basics of nature are handled in terms of moisture and temperature control, turns brutal. Taken together, these layers redefine what a soldier's second skin should feel like: functional, protective, and made for real-world missions, not design boards. More than just a piece of paperwork, this IPR win signals the rising emphasis on innovation, design security, and homegrown defence tech of the Army, in complete harmony with the spirit of Atmanirbhar Bharat and the Army's Vision for the Decade of Transformation (2023-2032).
